Accessory Dwelling Units also known as carriage houses, granny flats, casitas, etc. are secondary homes either attached or detached from the existing house. If attached they can be in the basement, the attic, or an addition to the existing home. In most cases however this secondary unit is built above the garage in the rear of the lot. These ADUs have all the amenities of a standalone home. They include a kitchen, bathroom, living areas and bedrooms but in a smaller more condensed footprint.
